New York City
This week, however, will be very special in more than one way. Every night – except opening night June 12 – Kurt will bring a special guest to perform with his trio.
June 13: it will be fellow guitarist Peter Bernstein. Kurt and Peter have formed a mutual admiration society a long time ago, and have played together on many occasions before. His was the first name that came up when thinking of who to invite for this week, so it’s only fitting that he’s the first guest of the week.
June 14: Young saxophonist Aaron Burnett will join the band on the Thursday night. Kurt considers him a standout new voice on the saxophone…and so must Esperanza Spaulding as Aaron is part of her band.
June 15: Altosax legend Greg Osby will join the band on the Friday. Greg has been one of the most important voices on the alto sax for the past 25 years, has released 15 albums as a leader on Blue Note Records, and is a genuine innovator in this music. Kurt and Greg have talked for years about doing something together, and here’s the next step (pardon the pun).
June 16: New York City & jazz legend Johnny O’Neal will be featured with the trio. Johnny O’Neal is a true master of jazz, who not only is a masterful vocalist but is also a fantastic pianist! On this occasion he will focus entirely on the singing. He has worked with Clark Terry, Dizzy Gillespie, Nancy Wilson as well as Joe Pass & Kenny Burrell among many others. Johnny O’Neal also played Art Tatum’s character in the movie “Ray” portraying Ray Charles from 2004. And on this Saturday night Kurt Rosenwinkel is honored to be working with him!
June 17: piano master Geri Allen will contribute her soulful beauty to the last day of this weeklong engagement. And what a finale! Geri Allen is undoubtedly one of the most important jazz piano voices to appear in the last 30 years, and has recorded with Ornette Coleman, Charlie Haden, Betty Carter, Charles Lloyd, Steve Coleman and a multitude of other fantastic ensembles. Kurt & Geri will also play a duo show at Cité de la Musique on September 5, 2012!
To make it all even more special – the entire week will be recorded, and we plan to release a composite album from the week sometime in 2013. Come down to be part of this very special event – and the recording!
