Last year Kurt Rosenwinkel got an invitation to perform with legendary saxophonist Pharaoh Sanders band. It started out with a performance in Poland, which was just supposed to be a one-off, but the chemistry between them was such that Kurt was invited back to also play in Istanbul, Turkey a couple of weeks later.
Now US side fans will finally have a chance to witness the 2 of them together. Kurt is scheduled to be a special guest with Pharaoh’s band at the Atlanta Jazz Festival for a May 24, 2015 performance.
Once described by Ornette Coleman as “the best tenor player in the world”, Pharaoh Sanders came to prominence, initially, as a member of John Coltrane’s extended projects in the mid-60ties. After Coltrane he made prominent appearances on records such as Alice Coltrane’s “Journey In Satchidananda”, and has since continued to release albums and tour as a leader of his own units.
