First of all – Happy New Year and welcome to 2015 to all of you music fans out there! This year is already looking to be a very interesting one for Kurt Rosenwinkel, among other things with some interesting collaborations coming up later in the year.
But he starts the year in his home of homes (musically speaking): The New Quartet at the legendary Village Vanguard in New York City. They play Tuesday Jan. 6 through Sunday Jan. 11 and the band also features Aaron Parks (pia), Eric Revis (b) & Allan Mednard (dr).
The repertoire of the band will be focused around the 2012 Wommusic release “Star of Jupiter“, although there’s been a couple of additions to the repertoire since then notably by Aaron Parks. Kurt has also recently performed songs from his 2008 Wommusic album entitled “The Remedy” (recorded live at the Village Vanguard in 2006) again, and will be adding some subtle changes to the colors and orchestration of the pieces.
The photo above of course shows Kurt hanging out backstage at the Vanguard with legendary owner Lorraine Gordon, showing off a guitar she used to take lessons on. Lorraine was instrumental in getting Thelonious Monk signed with Blue Note records back in the day before she owned the Vanguard (she took over when her husband Max Gordon passed away), and any jazz fan should read her book “Alive at the Village Vanguard“. She is a bonafide legend in our industry, and at age 91 has managed to continue to book the most interesting new jazz talent now well into the 2nd decade of the 21st century.
Speaking of The Remedy: We recently added a video taken of the band from The Remedy performing Kurt’s song “Flute” (also from The Remedy). It was recorded at Iridium Jazz Club, also in NYC, back in 2006. You can watch it by clicking here. We hope you enjoy watching it as a little warm up to the shows coming up this week, and hope to see you down at the Village Vanguard!
